"If you saw what I see for the future in Yugoslavia, it would scare you." — Josip Broz Tito, 1971
The Cold War was over, and the Soviet Union was no more. However, theirs would not be the only union to collapse. After years of discourse and neglect, Yugoslavia has collapsed under its own weight, leaving in its place multiple states based on historically-ethnic lines. All is not well, as tensions continue to rise between the young states, and remnants of the Belgrade Regime seek the reunification of the multi-ethnic state. Outside the Balkans, other nations and factions watch on, eager to contain the unfolding powderkeg... Or to take advantage of it.
There is unlikely to be a lingering peace, but it is not impossible. The future is the sum of all actions taken in the present, and the actions taken during these circumstances are bound to be crucial for the fate of this region and its future. Will the former Yugoslav states manage to, against all odds, find common ground and resolve their differences? Or will they be forced to the limits of desperation and depravity? You decide.
